Maryland's First Green Zone is in Savage Park

Savage Park has been named a green zone by the American Green Zone Alliance. (AGZA) The announcement made this month makes Howard County the first jurisdiction to be named a green site.

“Howard County has become a leader in the state and region through its fight against climate change,” said the County Executive, Calvin Ball. “...We are continuing to make progress towards our climate goals.

AGZA Certified Green Zones are areas all of the routine landscape maintenance is performed with low-impact equipment and people-powered tools, resulting in a clean, quiet and sustainable landscape.

The county purchased battery-powered hedgers, leaf blowers and trimmers that will be used and stored at Savage Park.

“This new equipment improves working conditions for our staff and takes significant steps towards Howard County reducing the negative impacts of gas-powered maintenance,” said Nick Mooneyhan, director of Howard County Recreation and Parks. “This transition highlights our commitment to sustainability and enhancing the quality of life for our residents.”

The shift to greener landscaping maintenance will mean lower costs for the county.

Estimates are the county will save $8,500 in savings on fuel and maintenance. Each year, the switch to new battery-operated equipment will :

  • Eliminate an estimated 570 pounds of toxic and carcinogenic emissions, including 43 pounds of ozone-forming exhaust;

  • Remove 1,125 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions—the equivalent of what 23 mature trees absorb in a year; and

  • Prevent potential spills of gas and oil that could seep into our soil and aquifers.

“The peaceful experience you enjoy while walking, playing, or simply relaxing here at Savage Park is now even more serene--Thanks to these electric hand-held tools.” said Ball.
