BALTIMORE, MD – Maryland added 38,400 jobs in 2024 and had a 1.4 percent growth rate according to end-of-year employment numbers released Jan 28 by the U.S. Department of Labor.


In December, Maryland’s labor force participation rate remained constant at 65.6 percent, which slightly exceeds the national participation rate of 62.5 percent. But even as 200 additional jobs were added, there were job losses across the state in various industries.


The five sectors with the largest estimated employment loss in December were:


  • Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation (-2,600 jobs)


  • Services (-1,100 jobs)


  • Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities (- 600 jobs)


  • Private Educational Services (-500 jobs)


  • Construction (-400 jobs).


Maryland’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.1 percent, which is below the national unemployment rate of 4.1 percent.
