Communities across Maryland have an opportunity to grow their tree canopy and improve local environments through the MDOT Urban Tree Grant Program.

The program provides funding up to $5,000 for tree planting projects in urban communities impacted by transportation projects resulting in tree loss. Additional funding is available for projects that establish pocket forests, which are small, densely planted clusters of native trees and shrubs that mimic a natural, self-sustaining ecosystem. Priority is given to projects that help address environmental justice concerns, urban heat islands, and the need for increased tree canopy in underserved areas.

Applications are currently being accepted until July 15 for the fall planting season.

The grant program is offered through a partnership between the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the Maryland Urban Community Forest Committee.
